E-Safety conference for vulnerable children
The Foster Care Co-operative (FCC), a Skyrocket founding agency, is hosting a conference on the subject of e-safety for vulnerable children.
The conference, entitled ‘Your Child’s Digital World’, will be a showcase of good practice, training and awareness on everything cyber – but with a consideration for children in care.
The conference aims to look at potential risks and threats in the cyber world, along with general e-safety. Organised and presented by FCC’s Sheffield-based e-safety specialist and social worker, Lynn Findlay, the event will take place on Tuesday 5th February 2019, at The Carlton Park Hotel, Rotherham.
Lynn is passionate about keeping young people safe online. As well as delivering in-house training programmes, Lynn writes a monthly blog on online safety issues called ‘Understanding your child’s digital world’ for The Foster Care Co-operative. She has also written articles for regional and national publications such as The Guardian.
She had the idea for the conference after attending a Safeguarding Children presentation in London. She became aware that there wasn’t a resource aimed at vulnerable and fostered children – where a Local Authority is ultimately responsible for a child, but day-to-day care is undertaken by carers.
A number of speakers have already been confirmed. Cath Knibbs, the UK’s leading Cyber trauma consultant, therapist and researcher, will be a keynote speaker. Cath writes extensively about children’s cyberspace engagement and contributes to an online safely magazine for schools called #DITTO. She also presents at national and international conferences including those organised by The Centre for Child Mental Health (CCMH), NSPCC and The Marie Collins Foundation.
Also confirmed as a speaker is David Sankey, co-founder of the not-for-profit organisation, Guardian Saints. Guardian Saints effectively keep watch over the ever changing landscape of threats to children’s safety and privacy online, and works with organisations to deliver effective strategies to counter these threats. The organisation also lobbies for change, in order to make the internet a safer place for children.
The conference has a diverse appeal. Young people, carers and organisations working with children would find the day useful. In fact, anyone interested in the safeguarding of young people online would be interested in the range of information and knowledge being shared.
In line with FCC’s ethical, not-for-profit ethos, all surplus income after expenses from all ticket sales from the conference will be ploughed back into providing more foster care support and training.
